Belair

In recent years Air Berlin has grown both organically and through acquisitions. The Air Berlin Group includes not only Air Berlin, but also the Austrian airline NIKI » (49.9 per cent), the Swiss airline Belair (49 per cent) and the Düsseldorf-based airline LTU (100 per cent). NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH was created from Aero Lloyd Austria GmbH, in which Niki Lauda had acquired a majority share in November 2003. In January 2004 Air Berlin and NIKI created the first European low-fare alliance. In February 2010 Air Berlin increased its holding in NIKI from 24 to 49.9 per cent. The company’s base airport is Vienna and it serves destinations not only in Austria, but many other places in Europe. In November 2007 Air Berlin acquired a 49 per cent stake in Belair Airlines AG from the previous sole proprietor, Hotelplan, and assumed economic responsibility for the Swiss airline. In October 2009 a trust became the new owner of a 51 per cent stake in Belair, with Air Berlin being granted an option to purchase this share. Belair’s base airport is Zurich and the airline operates services to holiday destinations around the Mediterranean, in Egypt, the Canary Islands and major German cities. LTU (originally Lufttransport-Union, then from 1956 Lufttransport-Unternehmen) was founded in 1955. It was first taken over by Rewe-Touristik in 2000. Then in 2006 Intro Verwaltungs GmbH, a company based in Nuremberg, and LTU’s Managing Director, Jürgen Marbach purchased a stake in the airline. From 2007 onwards LTU was transformed from a charter into a scheduled airline. In 2007 Air Berlin took over LTU and integrated all of the aircraft in its own fleet.
